What is the truth about the existance of magical ... of vintage carbon composite resistors and vintage capacitors?

If you can't think of anything new, rehash other peoples work!

Here are some good reads about the magical (or not) capabilities of resistors and capacitors.

And GeoFex also has a good read about carbon composite resistors:

Want the management summary?

  1. Drift in values cause difference in sound. Vintage parts have much higher drift than modern ones. So that is a debunked myth.
  2. Although vintage components are more noisy, the distortion is almost inaudible at the low voltages they run at in pedals.
  3. Ceramic capacitors have a shorter lifespan and are more susceptible to micro-phonics. But that is true for both modern as well as vintage ones.
