Transparent Overdrives?

Yes, we are going into dangerous territory! But before we do that let's just start by saying that I admire Brian Wampler so much that my friends start giving me funny looks.

He is so willing to share his knowledge that it makes me cry :) Thank you for that Brian.

Ok, there will be nay sayers about his take on pedals and circuits but even they have to admit that this man is willing to share and educate.

And now back to topic. Transparant overdrives. Basically there are only a few original ones and then there are thousands of clones or derivatives. The main original ones are the Klon Centaur, Marshall Bluesbreaker and Paul Cochrane Tim/Timmy. PS I love all of these and sell them as PCB clones!

As with magical components the price of an advertised "true transparant" OD is determined by it's mythical status. The best example is the Klon Centaur which, by the way, is being actively sold again on eBay by Bill Finnegan himself!

If we go by the definition given on the Klon Centaur wiki, transparent in this context means:

"Adding gain to the signal without significantly altering the tone of the guitar"

Looking at this definition, any clean boost will fit the bill. Paul Cochrane described it in an interview as:

"A dirt box that can be set to be a clean booster"

And now back to Brian Wampler, he made follow-up on a previous video he made about this topic which you should/have to/must watch, just to form your own opinion about the need (or not) for transparent ODs. And of course his blog about it.
